On 25th September a gruelling challenge was undertaken by a team of 30 people from the Hastings area who climbed the Three Peaks - Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowd
This is something of an achievement in itself, but they have also raised, for St Michael’s day to day running costs, the grand total of £6,500 with perhaps a bit more sponsorship to come.
Marathon des Sables, 2010 Leo Avery, from Ticehurst, East Sussex undertook th Marathon des Sables in April and ran in the Hastings Half as part of his training. The Marathon des Sables takes place over 7 days across the Sahara desert. Runners have to cover 155 miles in temperatures of up to 120°F, carrying all their own kit, including a week’s supply of food. Leo did amazingly well, coming 193 out of almost 1,000 entrants. He has raised around £11,000! 24 Hour Runs - 31st July - 1st August Two teams took part in gruelling 24 hour runs for St Michael’s Hospice at the end of July. A team from Hastings Runners, organised by Dave Strachan, ran in relay from Hastings Old Town to St Leonards and back over a 24 hour period, including a marathon distance covered by two runners during the night. They raised a wonderful £1,000! Lee Wasden, Kevin Scoles, Mick Cooke, Donna Smith, Andy Seward, Huw Brown, James Dunn and Jamie Lamb all took part in the 24 Hour Thunder Run on the same weekend and their sponsorship has also topped the £1,000 mark.
Winchester to Canterbury Pilgrimage At the beginning of September two intrepid ladies set out from Winchester to ride ‘Sir Chancelot’ and ‘Rosalita’, to Canterbury. They carried a message from the Dean of Winchester to the Dean of Canterbury. They had a wonderful welcome along the route from local people and were escorted out of Winchester by a lovely traffic warden! Both Victoria and Heather thoroughly enjoyed their experience and are bringing out a book, sales in aid of the Hospice, describing their trip. Victoria, Heather, Sir Chancelot and Rosalita have raised a fantastic £2,220, for St Michael’s! Edward's bare chin!
Dr Newell's Nepal Trek Dr Nick Newell, a local GP, undertook an arduous trek in Nepal and raised an amazing £5,405 in sponsorship, thanks to patients, colleagues and friends. This photo shows Nick in Nepal. 'The Duke' Regulars Walk the South Downs Way A group of regulars at The Duke Public House in Hastings walked the South Downs Way in the Summer of 2010 and raised a wonderful £2,000 for the Hospice. Talented local choirs entertain for 12 hours! The Derek Norcross 12 Hour Play on 16th October was a great success and demonstrated the talent and diversity of local singing groups and instrumentalists. Audrey Norcross, Derek’s widow, kindly opened the concert at 12:30. Pupils from the Hastings and Rother Area Music Centre used their normal Saturday morning lessons to raise sponsorship from their family and friends. Beautiful hand made crafts, Christmas cards and jewellery all sold well on the day, as well as the tea and cakes of course! A feast of local choirs involving over 200 singers entertained the audience throughout the day demonstrating a wide variety of musical styles. Battle Choral Society provided over 70 singers alone. The singers were sponsored to take part and raised over £3,700 in sponsorship. The concert finished with extracts from Handel’s Messiah performed by over a hundred singers from the choirs taking part earlier in the day. This was a fantastic finale; a very fitting end to a superb musical extravaganza. James Cruttenden, the event organiser said, “We are very grateful to all the singers, pupils and instrumentalists, who took part on Saturday and to everyone who supported the event. St John’s is a wonderful venue and they have been extremely kind and generous in allowing us to use their lovely church. The funds raised through sponsorship, and donations on the day, will benefit St Michael’s Hospice, whose work helps and supports around 4,000 people a year in the Hastings and Rother area.”
